Amazing! MHS student in running for Nat’l Merit Scholarship, 4 others commended

This is amazing! Caeleigh MacNeil, a senior at Milton High School, was recently named a Semifinalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Ms. MacNeil, along with semifinalists nationwide, represent less than one percent of students who took the PSAT. More than 1.5 million students nationwide took this exam, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Just to put a little perspective on that – your chances of being struck by lightning are 1 in 10,000.

Terence J. McGonagle, 90, of Milton, firefighter

Terence J. McGonagle of Milton and formerly of Charlestown, a retired firefighter and the first CEO of the Boston Firefighters Credit Union, died Sunday at Hancock Park Nursing Center in Quincy. He was 90. (Read the full story here.)

Joyce amendment could benefit schools

State Senators Brian A. Joyce (D – Milton) and Katherine Clark (D – Melrose) have proposed an amendment that would increase state funding to the Milton schools by $348,649. The amendment passed the Senate after vigorous debate and must now be reconciled with the House version of the bill, which did not contain such a provision.

Six-year-old Michael Jeye of  Needham is studying apples in  school. Broadmeadow School in Needham,  He’s gone apple picking  with his class and will go again with his father, Greg, today. Rachel’s Challenge Touches Students, Community

More than 100 parents, guardians and students came to the Charles C. Winchester Auditorium on Wednesday night to see a presentation of Rachel’s Challenge.

This is a national program named for Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School shootings. The presentation delivers a highly regarded anti-violence and anti-bullying message.

Mtg notes: Selectmen 10.06.11 – Shields on Citizens Speak, Police appointments, gov’t review committee

The 10/6 session of the Milton Board of Selectmen largely focused on a variety of issues. Mr. Shields raised some thoughts about how Citizens Speak is conducted. He recommended that the board consider limiting speakers to a reasonable length, perhaps 2 – 3 minutes. he also suggested that the board refrain from engaging with the speakers and offering any immediate response.

Milton Community Builders honored at Celebrate Milton

Every year Celebrate Milton! honors individuals who make a substantial contribution to the fabric of the community. Individuals are nominated and submitted to the Celebrate Milton team by residents of the community. This year the Community Builder award went to Tucker School parent Wendy Blutt.

Bersani appointed new Animal Control Officer

Nancy Bersani will be taking the reins from Linda Kippenberger as Milton’s Animal Control Officer. Ms. Kippenberger recently retired from the position.

Ms. Bersani is well-known in town as an animal advocate in her role as president of the Milton Animal League. Officials, including Chief Wells, commented that has a passion for and is well qualified to serve this new position. She was appointed by unanimous vote of the Selectman.
