Wendy Lee O’Malley grew up in a Milton that was predominantly white. After moving to the town from Boston’s Chinatown as an elementary school student, she was one of the few Asian students at Milton High School when she graduated in 1992. (Read the full story here.)

The Superintendent’s public evaluation

Among the items of business the School Committee discussed last week was the Superintendent’s performance.  It was the second step in what is a three-step public process. The first step was the Superintendent, Mary Gormley, giving her “self-reflection.” The second consisted of feedback from the individual school committee members and the third, which is on the agenda for their next session, is a formal statement. Does this make sense?

At the last meeting of the School Committee Assistant Superintendent John Phelan reported on the status of putting all Milton Public School materials online. It is still a work in progress – but good progress has been made.

The work of Vincent Crotty on display at MPL

During the month of November, the Milton Library’s Wotiz Gallery will be graced with the paintings of Irish native Vincent Crotty. Mr. Crotty, a visual artist, paints figures and landscapes from life and in the studio. His work spans a wide range, from the back streets of his hometown in Ireland to the back porches of his Dorchester three-decker neighborhood.

Pumkins on Parade!

There is a great outdoor exhibit of pumkins at the Cunningham / Collicot Schools. They are as diverse as the folks that made them and they are a joy to behold. You got to stop by.

Pierce Middle School recognized for commitment to student nutrition and health

The Pierce Food Service Staff and school recently received the “US Healthy Challenge Award” at the Bronze level from the US Department of Agriculture for their commitement to student nutrition and health. This award is a significant acknowledgement of the efforts of the service staff ane they are to be heartily commended. Only 1% of schools nationwide receive this honor.
