2014 Annual Town Mtg – Day 1: Landscaping businesses now allowed in Milton; Thayer may apply for special permit
by Frank Schroth (updated 11:05)
Last night’s Town Meeting session concentrated on one article, Article 2 of the Special Town Meeting Warrant which sought approval for the Planning Board to grant a special permit to ongoing landscaping businesses in Milton. This article was a citizens petition, signed by ~260 residents, brought forward by owners Thayer Nursery. After a lengthy discussion the article, which required a 2/3 majority, passed by a voice vote.
Today is Teacher Appreciation Day

Is this a Native American burial site . . . or a primitive loading dock?
by Frank Schroth
The answer to that question could put any development of the old town farm on hold. The property, which was left in trust to benefit the poor of Milton, is under agreement with Pulte Homes. Pulte has agreed to pay $5,000,000 for 30 acres of the land (the entire lot is 34 acres) and will construct a cluster development of market rate homes on the site. The proceeds of the sale will go into a fund to benefit financially stressed Milton residents. However, if the lot is proven to be a Native American burial site that development may not be allowed and the sale could fall through.
The thorn that is Thayer and the opportunity for a 2nd chance
Commentary by Frank Schroth
The warrant for town meeting is thick, so thick it had to be bound rather than stapled. That’s expensive to do. Why so thick? Primarily due to the presence of large zoning articles. Two of these are duplicate citizens petitions regarding landscaping use. The landscaper in question is Thayer Nursery. The procedural confusion these two articles might create is just one aspect of what is likely to be Town Meeting’s thorniest issue.

Letter from Cindy Christiansen
As Milton develops its Master Plan and as we discuss plans for condominiums and other multi-family development in our Town, I want to suggest that the Town adopt a public health policy for new multi-family homes.
