Senator John Kerry announced today that Massachusetts was one of 15 states along with the Disctrict of Columbia chosen as a Race to the Top finalist. Race to the Top is a federal program that will award ~$4 billion in aid to states with a demonstrated committment to education reform. Two specific areas they are evaluating are stratgies for improving failing schools and the expansion of charter schools.
Special Town Meeting will go into its fifth night this evening to take up an article to fund the wind turbine and approve a blasitng ordinance. The wind turbine may meet resistance for the owners of the Granite Links Golf Course. The partners have stated that it will “destroy the Blue Hills” and their golf course.
A letter arrived in the mail boxes of patrons of the Forbes House Museum this week from Mary Wendell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The contents made a surprise announcement. Christine Sullivan, longtime director, was stepping aside and a search has been opened for a new director.

The zoning overlay article before Town Meeting was defeated.
The motion required a 2/3 vote of town meeting and with a roll call result of 137 yes to 97 no, failed to get it.
Last night over 30 residents, many Town Meeting members, rose to speak on the issue of the zoning overlay for the Temple Shalom property bringing the number of people heard close to 45; with slightly more speaking in favor than against. But it is not over yet.
