Update from the School Superintendent

Mary Gormley, Superintendent of the Milton Public Schools has published her monthly update. It is available of the Milton Public School web site. View the complete update here. She addresses upcoming graduation, sports, swine flu etc. It is thorough and informative.

We’d like to call out two items because they illustrate how broad and deep the talents of our students are. Ms. Gormley writes:

“Speaking of graduating seniors, we would like to commend Evelyn Orlando, a student in Mme. Laine’s
French Humanities class. Along with her classmates, Evelyn recently entered an essay contest sponsored by the French Consulate in Boston. She was just notified that she has won the contest, earning a two-week, all expense paid trip to Paris. Evelyn’s essay was chosen from more than 250 received from the region. She will join 130 young people and 20 teachers on her Parisian trip, which will allow for the discovery of French culture and civilization through the eyes of the young. We are very proud of Evelyn and wish her ‘bon voyage.'”

and then there was this:

“Our very own Wally Heller, a Cunningham first-grader, recently won a statewide contest, sponsored by Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill and the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Wally submitted a drawing of Cunningham Elementary School and an essay, explaining why he thinks his school is “The Ideal School.” Nearly 2,500 students entered the contest and Wally was one of only 14 winners. He will attend a ceremony at the State House next week. Great job!”

Milton Hospital Announces 2nd Annual Community Health Day

Free health-focused event features behind the scenes hospital tours, an opportunity to save lives, interactive exhibits, games, snacks and fun for all ages

What to bring:

  • Bike helmet – safety checks will be offered
  • Old cell phones – to be recycled by D.O.V.E.
  • Books and recent magazines in good condition,
  • collected by our volunteers for hospital patients and visitors
  • A few dollars for lunch
  • Sunscreen – it is an outdoor event

The family focused event will feature an array of health-focused interactive exhibits, fun demonstrations and activities for all ages. The “Gallery of Health” will showcase exhibitors from the Milton Hospital family, as well the local community, covering such health issues as heart disease and skin cancer and providing screenings for cardiac health, blood pressure, glucose levels, lung capacity and physical fitness.

Throughout the day, attendees will be treated to presentations that promote healthy and active lifestyles, including demonstrations from Judy’s School of Dance, kickboxing from Fitness Unlimited, karate from Kearney’s American Martial Arts, plus Tai Chi, yoga and music therapy workshops. Cedar Hill Health Care Center of Randolph will also be offering Wii demonstrations.

MWRA work may temporarily discolor water

MWRA WORK MAY CAUSE DISCOLORED WATER IN MILTON

The MWRA has been conducting an extensive rehabilitation program of its water pump stations to increase redundancy and reliability of the water system. On Wednesday, May 27th , the MWRA will begin testing of the newly rehabbed Hyde Park Pump Station. Testing will continue through Friday. This will create the potential for highly discolored water in the Fairmount Hill area of Hyde Park and Milton, especially the west side. Residents will not experience a reduction in water pressure. The discolored water should lessen on Thursday and dissipate by the weekend.

Absentee ballots available for June 8th override election

On June 8th there will be an election on a Proposition 2 1/2 override. you can obtain an absentee ballot from the Town Clerk’s office. You can also find an absentee ballot application online here.

Absentee ballots are for voters who will be out of town during the hours when the polls will be open, or who are unable to go to the polls because of disability or religious belief, may vote by absentee ballot.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is noon June 5.

Update from Greensburg, Kansas

Lasat week we noted that Milton resident and member of the wind turbine committee, Daryl Warner, had gone to Greensburg, Kansas, a town that was literally wiped off the face of the earth by a tornado.

Warner went out as part of a volunteer team to assist in construction and rebuilding efforts. What was of special interest to Warner was the decision made by the town to rebuild in a “green” manner. They are powered in part by renewable energy and are employing a variety of strategies that are energy efficient and / or using sustainable materials; LED lighting for example and bamboo.

MHS Bulletin for 05.28.09

  • Congratulations to Dylan Crapps, Allen Lasoff and Liz Sorgi. Their astute investment strategies earned a 1st place finish in the Spring 2009 Mass Stock Market Competition. These MHS Financial Planning students will be honored at an awards breakfast at Eaton Vance Investment Managers in Boston next week.
  • 3C’s meeting today in room 230 after school.
  • Hey all everyone’s favorite event, The Japanese Exchange is coming early next year. If you would like to be a Japanese Ambassador pick up the application in the office or in room 229, starting today. Remember it is first-come first-serve, so hurry and sign up now.
  • The verdict is in, next years European Vacation will be Germany, Italy and Switzerland so broaden your horizons and travel abroad. If you sign up by the end of the week you can lock in the 2009 price for 2010. Get your application in room 229 ASAP.

Good news (health) / bad news (real estate)

The Boston Business Journal reported yesterday that Massachusetts home sales continue to slide. This is based on data from the Warren Group. Sales in April sank to their lowest level since 1990. The median price for a home fell 13.5% year over year to $265,000. You can read the full story here.

On the plus side, the BBJ also reports that the Boston Metropolitan area is ranked 4th in fitness out of the country’s top 50 metrpolitan areas. This is according to the American College of Sports Medicine’s American Fitness Index which was produced in partnership with the Wellpoint Foundation. You can read the full story here.

Blue Hills Mountain Bike Discovery Day

Perfect your pedaling power with the DCR Rangers, Blue Hills TrailWatch and the NEMBA.
Let’s hit the trails to kick off the summer season. Work on your skills as we ride with fun obstacles and challenges along the way. Bring your own bike. Helmets are required.

This is the first of three Bike Discovery events in the DCR South Region.

Skills clinics throughout the day. Fun obstacles and challenges along the way. Enjoy guided rides for all ages and abilities.

-Beginner ride at 11am, 12pm, 1pm (2 to 7miles, easy pace and terrain, basic riding skills along the way)
-Novice at 10:15am, 12:15pm (4 to 9 miles, mellow pace, mixed terrain)
-Kids and Family at 10:30am, 12:30pm (2+ miles, easy terrain parents must accompany kids)
-Advanced at 10:45am, 12:45pm (10 to 20+ miles, technical terrain, fast pace, few stops)
