Update from Greensburg, Kansas

Lasat week we noted that Milton resident and member of the wind turbine committee, Daryl Warner, had gone to Greensburg, Kansas, a town that was literally wiped off the face of the earth by a tornado.

Warner went out as part of a volunteer team to assist in construction and rebuilding efforts. What was of special interest to Warner was the decision made by the town to rebuild in a “green” manner. They are powered in part by renewable energy and are employing a variety of strategies that are energy efficient and / or using sustainable materials; LED lighting for example and bamboo.

Warner’s back and “had an amazing experience. All of the people we met were proud, friendly and filled with hope.”

While there, Warner worked at “the silo house, ” designed to withstand winds up to 200 mph. He worked with a team that installed a tongue & groove bamboo floor. The roof has a garden and a PV array outside will supply electrical energy for LED lighting, etc.

In addition, other projects the group tackled included planting 150 trees, insulating, and hanging and finishing drywall.

An elder Mennonite couple, grateful for all the trees that were planted, took the group out to dinner at their favorite restaurant 60 miles east of Greensburg for fried chicken. And you thought finding a meal in Milton was tough.

Before they left, they visited a couple of wind farms near Dodge City; one of which had 170 turbines and the another 125.
