A Hendries Halloween

Commentary by Frank Schroth

Fall Town Meeting could get spooky this evening, especially when articles 12 &13 come up. They concern the town-owned portion of the Hendries property — that eerie parking lot that sits vacant and dark. What is spooky about these articles? Well, the town might make progress with a plan for moving forward. There’s a scary thought.

Oh Hendries, where art thou?

Commentary by Frank Schroth

Last August at a meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Chair Keohane announced that “the Connellys are on board” with an effort to revive a mixed use development at the Hendries site. They would be holding two neighborhood meetings in September at which their attorney and Cheryl Tougias, a local architect, would present the revised plan. Those meetings did not happen. That is not all that hasn’t happened.

The devil in the Hendries details

Commentary by Frank Schroth

The summary provided by the Chair of the Board of Selectmen Denis Keohane regarding the Hendries property was welcome news to the neighborhood and town. A signature property that is a gateway to the town and could serve as the anchor in a small commercial pocket that is beginning to thrive thanks to the efforts of the merchants there may actually develop into something to be hoped for and desired: a mixed used development that delivers attractive public amenities (businesses and open space) on a scale that is compatible with the surroundings and financially rewarding to the developer. But as Senator Joyce, who resusitated this, knows, the devil is in the details.

Brief bits: the Hendries enigma, Hospice approved and a small gaggle of goslings

by Frank Schroth

The redevelopment of the Hendries building is largely an enigma to the neighborhood. The residents do not know what is happening. Does anyone? There are three issues or strands dangling unresolved. The Building Inspector issued a demolition order which was affirmed by the Board of Selectmen late last year (see related post here); but there the building sits. There are at least two reasons for that.

COA candidates’ debate a tame affair except. . .

by Frank Schroth

Most of the candidates for town wide office appeared for the third and final forum of the campaign season yesterday morning at the Council on Aging. The Council on Aging debate is unique in that the questions for the candidates come from the audience, which makes it interesting especially when Gene Irwin asks a question or three.

Letter: Yovino questions environmental impact study

from Paul Yovino, this letter was also submitted to the Boston Globe

Letter To The Editor:

Regarding the proposed flight changes at Logan Airport which would bring departure flights over Milton I have read that proposal’s defining document , The Boston Logan International Airport Runway 33L Area Navigation Standard Instrument Departure Environmental Assessment Draft , several times and it seems purposely vague as to the airplane noise impact on the variously affected cities and towns.
