Ballot question 3, which proposes rolling back the sales tax to 3%, could have a significant impact on the finances of towns and municipalities across the Commonwealth. Following are opinions from Milton Board of Selectmen, our state senate candidates and local news organizations.
MyTownMatters asked the Board of Selectmen via email if they wanted to share their position or thoughts on Question 3. Ms. McEttrick, current chair, is opposed to rolling the tax back “because of the impact diminished revenue would have on local services.”
Mr. Shields and Mr. Sweeney did not volunteer opinions both sharing a point of view that they believed the voters knew best. Mr. Shields stated that, “I think the public can make up their minds on these issues without my input.” Mr. Sweeney, who spoke recently at a Council on Aging breakfast, repeated what he said to the audience, namely, “that what counted with the upcoming state ballot questions was their opinion to be expressed in the polling booths not mine. We thank all three for their responses.
State Senate candidates Burr and Joyce disagree on the question. Burr favors a Yes vote, Joyce a No vote. You can listen to them voice their opinions here.
Here are editorials on the issue from local news organizations:
- Patriot Ledger: Ballot questions 2, 3 would hurt state more than help
- Boston Globe: Vote no on 3 — Beacon Hill needs reforms, not stunts
- Boston Herald — we cannot find an editorial on this question (They recommend Yes on Q1 and Q2)
