New Milton High School football coach Jim Bowes follows in his father’s footsteps

from The Patriot Ledger

It’s almost like somebody thought it would be a good idea for Jim Bowes to prove again that he’d listened to one of his father’s most important lessons.

As assistant coach for seven years at Milton High School, where he played football and was coached by his dad Jack, Jim Bowes didn’t get the Wildcats head coaching position the first time it opened up. Jim stayed in the game for a couple years – a season at Stoughton High School, two years on the staff at Curry College – then took some time off from the sidelines. (Read the full story here.)

Older drivers bridle at blanket criticism

from the Boston Globe

From the window in her office at the Council on Aging, director Mary Ann Sullivan watches the tense debate over elderly driving play out in the parking lot each day. Taking note of every dinged door and jumped curb, each wrong turn and pedal choice, she wonders whether it’s time to step in.

“I watch them drive over center islands, almost hit each other, go the wrong way,” she said. “They are serious accidents waiting to happen, and just shouldn’t be on the road.” (Read the full story here.)

East Milton branch library to close 7/1, main branch to be open on Sundays

In a 6-1 vote this evening the Library Board of Trustees voted to close the East Milton branch library and open the main branch on Sundays. Two of the trustees were absent; which was slightly surprising given the importance of this session.

The meeting began with a citizens speak in which several residents rose to speak in favor of keeping the library open.

Upon closure of citizens speak, Andrea Gordon introduced the motion to close the East Milton branch and extend the Main Branch hours to Sunday. Barbara Mason spoke in oppostition to closing the branch. She proved to be the sole dissenting vote.

The other members spoke in support of the motion. Janet Evans, current chair, in an emotional voice spoke of her obligation to the town, “that is what I was elected to do.”
