Is this your cat? She was found wandering outside, and is now in the Milton animal shelter.

The animal control officer knows someone loved her. With one scan she found an ID microchip implanted in the cats shoulder, the high-tech link that’s supposed to reunite lost pets with their owners.

“So someone could be looking for this cat right now?”

Nancy Bersani, Milton Animal Control Officer: “Oh, they absolutely could.” (Read the full story here.)

Milton Commuter Alert: notes, news, and I-93 closures for 9/27

NEWS ITEMS

T’s subway maps, putting form before function, may not help commuters navigate the world abovefrom The Boston Globe – 09.27.09

Say you’re visiting Boston, or don’t go downtown much. You’ve spent the day at the aquarium and need to get to the Red Line on the T. But how?

If you look at the MBTA map, you might be tempted to hop on the Blue Line, switch trains at State Street to the Orange Line, and then switch lines again at Downtown Crossing. Or you could take the Blue Line to Government Center, switch to the Green Line, and then switch again to the Red Line at Park Street.

MBTA rolls out new system mapsfrom the Patriot Ledger – 0.22.09

The familiar colored lines illustrating the subway routes on Boston’s transit maps have a new look: thin brown lines that show where major bus routes connect with subway stations.

The new maps, unveiled by MBTA officials on Monday, have been under development for about a year, because “customers deserve to be provided with accurate information,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in an e-mail.

T gets fed signal-failure alertfrom The Boston Herald – 09.24.09

After a federal equipment-failure alert stemming from the investigation into the deadly Washington D.C. Metro crash, the MBTA will test similar equipment on its Red and Orange lines.

Two benefits . . . two good causes!

And they're off!

And they're off!

Yesterday saw two benefits held here. Actually, that is not entirely true. One was in Foxborough.

Thanks Friends of Mike Madden

Thanks Friends of Mike Madden

That would be the Revolution game vs Seattle. “The Friends of Mike Madden” organized a group of local soccer fans to attend in support of Mike Madden, coach of the MHS boys varsity soccer team. Mike went through some back surgery that did not go so well. And there are quite a few people eager to see him get clear this hurdle that has been put in front of him. They showed up at the Revs game in support of Mike. Coach Madden was introduced to the crowd at Gillette stadium before the game.

Madden coaches teams at all levels all over the place. In addition to the boys teams at the high school, there are Milton travel teams and a club team and who knows what else. He’s a coaching machine .  . .but he is not a machine. He is a honest, passionate guy with high standards who wants to see a successful program built in Milton. As it happens I bumped into Coach Madden yesterday afternoon on my way to drop off some baked goods at the other benefit that took place yesterday, the MHS Walk-a-thon.  He was perched in the MHS parking lot that overlooks the lower playing field at the high school watching a Milton traveling soccer game of course.

PS – the Revs won for coach. They prevailed over Seattle 2-1 on a goal from Sharlie Joseph in the 87th minute.

As for the Walk-a-thon, what a gorgeous day! The Walk-a-thon to benefit MHS sports and activities took place under clear blue skies and crisp autumn air at Brook field.

The MHS Boosters had the concession stand open; FAME and FAVA, the music and art support groups, had a bake sale going, and slowly a sizable crowd began to congregate, waiting for the whistle to walk and honor the pledges they received.

At 3:00pm they commenced. They proceeded under an arch of red and white balloons led by Asst Superintendent Phelan, assorted faculty (and Tinker Bell!) to music performed by the MHS band and with the MHS cheerleading squad encouraging them on. Laura Kessler and her team did a fantastic job in organizing the event.

National Museum Day at Blue Hills Trailside Museum

from The Patriot Ledger

The great horned owl, rescued as a baby when he fell out of a tree, is one of the attractions Saturday at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Milton.

The adult owl, which has no name so people won’t think of him as a pet, is being shown to families by volunteer Daniel Burton, 26, of Dedham. (Read the full story here. Included in the story is a video.)

Meeting notes: Board of Selectmen 09.24.09

Following are some highlights from the Board of Selectmen’s meeting of 09.24.09:

Street lights to come back on: The public works initiative of turning off half to the town’s street lights in an effort to save money is not working out as hoped. A range of issues have surfaced not the least of which is a flood of calls to the Selectmen’s office. With this effort underway and the days shortening, the town is realizing that a number of street lights were burned out. Shields stated his opinion, “I recommend we abandon ship on this.” The Selectmen voted to reverse course.

Ingrid Shaffer interim Library Trustee: The Library Trustees appeared before the board to seek approval on their nominee, Ingrid Shaffer as interim trustee to fill the seat vacated by Robert Varnerin. Barbara Mason was the lone library trustee vote against Shaffer. She explained that this was not because she felt Shaffer unqualified but that she believed seating someone from East Milton would have been a nice gesture. Shaffer ran for the office in the last election. The Board of Selectmen approved the Trustees recommendation. Congratulations Ingrid!

Cupcakes!: Bill Clark of the Planning Office gave an update on various developments around town. These include the wind turbine, Temple Shalom, Governor Stoughton land etc. The turbine is moving forward. the Temple Shalom development has been a long, ongoing process that is before the Planning Board (search on Temple Shalom for updates on this), a presentation on Gov Stoughton land is tentatively scheduled for November. In addition:  1) a cupcake shop will be going into the Fallon building on Central avenue. They are hopeful of opening before the holidays. 2) the Hendries building is in limbo. The owner submitted a new plan that was substantially different from what the Planning Board had initially seen. The Planning Board took exception to that. There has been no movement. Fagan spoke for many residents when she stated she found this, “very frustrating.”

More bike racks: Mr. Clark also reported that the town will receive 20 more bike racks. They will be installed at the central branch of the library and various business districts. They should be available by November.

Planning Board appear split on Temple Shalom development

At last night’s Planning Board Meeting members of the board spoke to their respective positions with regard to the redevelopment of the Temple Shalom property.

The board listened to a few petitioners in advance of resuming the Temple Shalom discussion. The developers of the Central Ave site have their work cut out for them. The board is not likely to approve their request to raise the height of the building due to “shadow” concerns and the fact that the only reason to raise it is to increase ceiling height and therefore make the units more “saleable.”

The board ruled favorably on a request to alter parking spaces at Milton Gas. The board checked their regulations and came to conclusion that request was reasonable and would be in compliance with those regulations.

Then came the discussion of Temple Shalom which was largely devoted to a presentation from a traffic engineer.
