Remembrance Sunday at First Parish

On October 28, First Parish in Milton will observe Remembrance Sunday. In this annual service, parishioners remember and honor the memories of those who have been dear to our lives. This service for all ages will be led by The Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt. All are invited to bring mementos or photos of loved ones for the candle table.

First Parish is located at 535 Canton Ave Milton MA 02186. The service begins at 10:30 am, the meetinghouse is wheelchair accessible, and all are welcome.

The Great Shakeout – Earthquake Drill

Today a number of states are participating in The Great Shakeout, an earthquake drill exercise. Massachusetts is not one of them. However, we did experience the termors of a quake from Southern Maine the day before yesterday. So, it seems rather timely to bring this to folks attention. In short, the exercise is to “Drop & Cover”. You can learn more here.

Parents voice opinions on French Immersion cap during extended Citizen Speak

Following a minor earthquake School Committee Chair Glenn Pavlicek opened last night’s session which was a specially called meeting to permit parents to voice their concerns regarding the upcoming vote of the committee on a recommendation from the Superintendent to cap the French Immersion enrollments beginning in fall 2013. The session, held in the Winchester auditorium, lasted for 3/2 hours. One estimate placed the attendance at ~150. Of those approximately 36 rose to speak – some twice. The comments and remarks came in advance of tonight’s scheduled vote on the recommendation.

Yes – that was an earthquake

I was sitting in the video control room of the Winchester Auditorium at Milton High School speaking with Mike Lynch of MATV at about ten after seven last night when everything took a bit of a skip. I looked at Mike. “What was that?” Evidently, it was an earthquake.

Quincy reverses plans on street closures at Milton border

Quincy has thrown into reverse its experiment to close a cut-through road into Milton after an uproar from residents.

Governors Road, which is partly in Quincy and partly in Milton, was closed Friday as part of Quincy’s ongoing paving and reconstruction project on the street. (Read the full story here.)

Tour Milton’s Graceful “Gatsby Era” Mansion

Milton’s “Great Gatsby” era estate and mansion will be open on Sunday, October 21 from 2 to 5 PM for a reception, tour, and open house. Refreshments will be served.

Mrs. Holden McGinley’s 1925 mansion at 582 Blue Hill Ave. was designed by Bigelow and Wadsworth, the ‘Gilded Age’ architect for the wealthy in Bar Harbor, the Hamptons, Manchester by the Sea, and Newport.

Pierce students nail MCAS

Fifty-two students from Pierce Middle School were honored at a special luncheon last week in recognition of  having achieved a “280” — or perfect score on one of their MCAS exams. Woo Hoo!

Reminder Former Boston Celtic, Chris Herren, to Speak at MHS

Former Boston Celtic and local high school basketball star Chris Herren is providing an anti-substance abuse presentation to members of the Milton community. The presentation will take place at a town-meeting style event on Thursday, October 18th at 7 pm in the Charles C. Winchester Auditorium. The presentation will last approximately one hour and will include a Question and Answer session.

Interview with Congressman Mike Capuano

Mike Capuano cam by Milton the other day and we had the opportunity to sit down with him. The most recent census resulted in some redistricting and he now represents the west side of town between Mattapan and Randolph. You can catch the interview this evening on MATV at 6:30PM.
