Milton Library Starts Teen Book Club

The Teen Services department of the Milton Public Library is forming a book club for readers ages 13-18. For its first book, the club has chosen Crash Into Me. This debut novel from author Albert Borris tells the story of Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae who meet online and share one common wish: to end their lives.

Mtg Notes: Plan’g Brd 12.13.12 (b) – Board discusses Assisted Living article for spring town meeting

The Planning Board discussed an Assisted Living article being revised for spring Town Meeting. The article had initially been submitted at the fall Town Meeting. TM voted to refer the matter back to the Planning Board. A number of concerns were expressed including but not limited to the availability of affordable units (See post and related comments here.)

Milton’s unfunded pension liability

The Boston Business Journal has an article on municipalities unfunded pension liabilities. The article begins, “Cities and towns in Massachusetts have reached a tipping point, one in which the cost to provide basic services and benefits to public retirees has far outstripped the local revenue collected to fund those obligations.” You can find a snapshot of Milton’s here.

Many suburban Boston school districts have become significantly more diverse, but their students are still primarily taught by white teachers.

A story in today’s Globe reports on the increase in minority students in suburban schools. The Planning Board covered a lot of ground during their 12/13/12 session: they debated the merits of a housing production plan, approved a special permit for a subdivision of the Boyle Estate (683-685 Brush Hill Rd.) and one on Wolcott Road, almost approved the Milton Hill House expansion, received an update on the status of the Master Plan visioning initiative, and also debated the assisted living article.

Everyone in Milton seems to know Sen. Brian Joyce

Everyone in Milton knows Sen. Brian A. Joyce, or it at least seems that way.

Sitting outside the Plate, a local restaurant where he is a Friday-morning regular, Joyce wore a navy jacket over a light blue shirt to keep out the chill. Between bites of what he claimed is “the best egg sandwich in Massachusetts,” seven or eight passers-by stopped to say hello. A few others in cars beeped and waved as they passed.
