This is the latest in a series of art works created by students of FAVA (The Friends and Advocates for the Visual Arts). This week’s work is a sculpture by Olivia Done, an 8th grade student at the Pierce Middle School. She created the work while attending a FAVA workshop, Clever Clay Creations.
FAVA is offering summer workshops. You can learn more about them here. (To view previously featured work, please click on the FAVA art tag below).
Ms. Done titled the sculpture “Terra Cotta Soldier.” Here she describes the work:
In my after school FAVA class, we created sculptures based on terra cotta soldiers found in China. Instead of the usual (more common) standing pose, I decided to sculpt this soldier in a kneeling position. This somewhat creates a picture of how these soldiers had to follow orders given from the chief [officer]. When making this, I had to make sure parts were secure and in proportion to the rest of the body. Instead of sculpting facial features into the soldier’s head, I lightly carved a face with a toothpick to indicate a somewhat blank expression. It took a lot of time and extra effort to get this soldier the way I wanted it, but it was completely worth it.
