Review: The Milton Player stage “Leading Ladies”

Review by Annie Davis

In its seventy-seventh season, the Milton Players opened its final production of the season Friday night with Leading Ladies a comedy by Ken Ludwig, directed by Rich White.

Set in a 1951 Pennsylvania town, Leading Ladies revolves around two down-at-their-luck actors who conspire to deceive a dying millionairess by claiming to be her heirs. A niece, the not-dead-yet millionairess, a greedy clergyman, an incompetent doctor, a not-so-smart college co-ed and her even-less-brainy beau complete the comedic cast. Evoking Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in multiple ways, Leading Ladies involves mistaken identity, cross dressing, and love turned on its head. And all’s well that ends well.

Perfectly cast and well-acted, the performance is well-balanced and professional. The continuous comedy and delightful story engaged a nearly full house on opening night.

The Milton Players seating is cabaret style. The audience sits at tables with savory snacks, candlelight, and decorations. Water, juice, and wine are served.

A great time was had by all. Here’s an easy, inexpensive, evening out of terrific entertainment. It’s really fun! One of Milton’s Must-Do opportunities: the Milton Players. This reviewer has already put next season into the datebook.

“Leading Ladies” runs at the Milton Women’s Club, Reedsdale Road, April 16, 17, and 23, 24 & 25, 2010. Showtimes are at 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturdays and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations are recommended and can be made online or by phone.
