Hendries demolition likely to be rescheduled

by Frank Schroth

There is a contract between the town and Carrick Realty to tear down their respective portions of the Hendries building by September 30th. This countdown timer would help keep tabs on the demo date for which many are waiting for with bated breath.

Given the discussion at the last Conservation Commission meeting on Tuesday they may have to bate their breath a bit longer. While this is the date that has been set; it is highly unlikely to be the date that it will happen.

In a discussion with Town Planner Bill Clark he confirmed that there was willingness between the town and Carrick Realty to extend the demolition date of 9/30. According to conversations with people present:

  • The town does not yet have a contract in place for the demolition. The building commissioner is in discussions with an applicant on the method to be used to take down the building.
  • At Tuesday’s session of the Conservation Commission, granted a continuance until October 14th for both parties. The town requested the continuance and Carrick agreed to that. The town had previously requested a continuance from the 30 day requirement to provide a bid response from the sole bidder for demolition, Regional Industrial Services Corporation. Back in August Carrick received a continuance for a notice of intent on the new construction. That date is also October 14.
  • Carrick was planning to piggyback on the town’s license with the T for a suspension of rail service. The T has stated that their is no time on their docket until January for such a suspension. The T will continue service running buses during the period the trolley is not running.

Steve Connelly, a principal at Carrick Realty, said he was looking for a September 27th date; but agreed to go along with the town request for a10/14 continuance.

Carrick is scheduled to appear before the Board of Appeals regarding their comprehensive permit for a 40B apartment development on September 30th.

Ok. I’m taking deep breaths ( breath in..breath out..) my yoga stress reduction isn’t quite working, it might take a little Johnny Walker to calm me down. I have my beach chair in the trunk just waiting for D-Day. I do believe it really will happen, what could possibly go wrong now? So many ” what ifs..” . What about the dust , the smell, the RATS , the mutant creatures lurking in the basement? On second thought, Maybe I will stay home and wait for the Mytown post: Henries building down ! The world will be a better place.

Don’t get your hopes up. Working with the MBTA takes a long time.

My recollection is that the building owners said they didn’t need anything from the T as they apportioned all the MBTA costs to the town. If that is true, they should be able to work with the Conservation Commission and then take the building down.

There is also the small matter of the promised public meetings in preparation for building demo. I wonder when of if they will happen.
