The Rusty Blades had to play 5 games in 48 hours in order to lock up a final 4-3 victory in the final game and win the Stinky Socks 2014 Tournament Championship. The Rusty Blades were well represented by a host of Milton residents who coach and/or have many children in the Milton Youth Hockey Program.
There was another team of friends from Milton in the tournament as well. “The Clunkers” were well represented by notable Milton residents such as Team Captain David Newcomb, Town Assessor Bill Bennett, and local realtor Corey Sprague.
The highlight of the tournament came in the semifinal round of the playoffs when the 4th seeded Rusty Blades faced off against the #1 seeded Clunkers with the pride of Milton on the line.
The game was a spirited battle among good friends from start to finish. The Rusty Blades took the lead 3-2 with 2 minutes to play and held off a late power play challenge by Clunkers led by team captain David Newcomb. The Rusty Blades went on to beat Blarney Stone 4-3 in the championship game. This feat is especially amazing given the age of the players. They are not quite grandfathers yet but most are well into their 40s. All that skating in the words of Captain Lloyd MacNeil, “was priceless, but not painless”.
Congratulations!
