Milton, Canton reach deal on separating water systems

An article in today’s Globe reports on the resolution between Canton and Milton regarding water usage. Canton had been receiving Milton water for a segment of its residents. Milton billed them for that water. They have reengineered their systems so as to no longer require it. However, some Milton residents are receiving water through Canton pipes. The likely result will be a fairly expensive engineering task, possibly as much as $6 million. The Milton DPW is currently assessing the task.

Chair of the Board of Selectmen, Denis Keohane, is quoted as saying:

“There was a comment [from previous Milton officials] that Canton may not have been totally honest with the amount of water it was using, and Canton took offense to that. And I don’t blame them.  .  . This could have been resolved diplomatically back then, and now we’re faced with this.”

Does this mean that innocent Milton MWRA Water/Sewer Rate payers will not only have to foot the bill for those unnamed number of residents who have not paid their sewer bills for years and years but now we will have to pay for Canton’s not being “…totally honest with the amount of water it has used.”

There must be an ethical solution to these MWRA discrepancies that does not further financially burden the already over burdened Milton MWRA water and sewer rate payers.
