Late last week the Governor signed two budget bills. Both will impact Milton. The first was the fiscal year 2013 supplemental budget of $125 million. In a communication with town officials Senator Brian A. Joyce confirmed that the supplemental budget includes $300,000 in funds to help offset the medical costs associated with supporting the care of injured Milton fireman Antonio Pickens.
At their last May session Town Meeting passed two articles regarding Mr. Pickens health expenses. One was to approve a petition the court to assess an increase in property taxes to cover expenses going forward, the other was a one time appropriation of $1 million to cover costs prior to tax taking effect. This support from the state provides relief on this legally obligated municipal expense.
The Governor also signed a $33.6 billion budget for fiscal 2014 on Friday. He vetoed $240 million in transportation funding and $177 million n unrestricted local aid (see related Dorchester Reporter coverage here.) The legislature will now take up the issue and either amend or vote to override the Governor’s veto.
