Come learn, create and enjoy art @ Artspace Milton!

by Frank Schroth

Milton has a new art center!

Artspace Milton, which will be in the former East Milton Library, will begin hosting classes for all ages starting in early November.

After several months of preparation and renovation, Artspace Milton is opening its’ doors, offering classes, workshops and events in art and design for young and old alike.

Artspace Milton grew out of FAVA, the after school arts enrichment program, with the goal of providing the same level of fun, creative, art instruction to the entire community.

“We are excited to be in this fanstatic space. It enables us to offer quality arts enrichment to the entire community in a great part of town,” said founding art instructor, Karen Hainline. “It will bring another dimension to the goods and services in East Milton Square and provide cultural opportunities to the public.”

Artspace Milton recently invited elected officials to take a brief tour of the building to review the renovations. “The work that has been done on the space looks great”, said Town Administrator Kevin Mearn. “It is good to see the building occupied and serving the public.”

Initial classes and workshops include handmade bookbinding, collage, painting, a boot camp on camera basics, story time art for preK children and “Art& a Movie” on Friday nights.

Getting ready to open

The organization will also host exhibits and events. The inaugural event will be a reading by Boston area novelist K.C. Frederick. Tuesday evening, November 8th at 7:00PM, Boston-area novelist K. C. Frederick will add a literary dimension to ArtSpace Milton. A longtime professor in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Frederick is the author of five acclaimed novels, including Country of Memory (1998), The Fourteenth Day (2000), and Accomplices (2003). His novel Inland won the 2007 PEN/L.L. Winship Award for Fiction.

Mr. Frederick will read from his most recent novel, After Lyletown, published this past summer. About the book Publishers Weekly writes: “Frederick frames his novel around intriguing crime fiction tropes, but his pacing is deliberate and the contemplation much deeper than is usually found in the genre, resulting in an absorbing examination of how violence can alter lives for years, no matter what the ideology fueling it.” A Q & A and a book signing will follow the reading. All are welcome.

You can find the list of initial classes and workshops on their web site.
