Today the doors of the Milton schools open up to ~3,000 students. Some will be in schools with new principals. Ms. Stephanie Nephew will be at the helm of Glover Elementary School and Dr. Karen Spaulding will be the new driver.
Both move have had previous positions in the Milton Schools. (Click on their names for posts about these principals and their appointments.)
In addition, there is a new a new curriculum coordinator athe Pierce Middle School. Amy Gale is taking the position vacated by Ms. Nephew. And Marilyn Decker will be the head of science for the schools.
The beginning of every school year is both a continuation of past traditions and practices as well as a new period for the district in which challenges, issues and opportunities are met and embraced.
The last year ended with on a somewhat ominous note given the incidents of ammunition found. There is an initiative underway to install security cameras at the middle and high schools. The hope is to have the cameras installed as soon as funding can be secured. The Copeland Foundation has made a significant contribution to that effort already.
In addition, Massachusett has adopted the national Core Curriculum. This may or may not have been done to help Massachusetts win “Raceto the Top” funding. Regardless, all school districts will need to review the framework against current offerings. Massachusetts already had one of the more rigoous state curricula and it is unlikely there will be any major changes.
We wish the administration, faculty, school committee, and especially the students the best of success in the coming educational year.
