88 Wharf Restaurant Opens 7/25

88 Wharf Restaurant

88 Wharf Restaurant

For the first time in over twenty years Milton residents will have a local restaurant serving full dinners along with a selection of wine, beer, and cocktails.

In a brief conversation this morning, the managing partners of the 88 Wharf Restaurant confirmed that they are going to open for business on July 25th at 5:00 o’clock.

The restaurant is on the first floor of the condominium complex at Milton Landing. It will feature an outdoor patio with seating for 40 and a terrific view. Indoors there is seating for 85, and a bar with a flat screen TV.

The menu, which features appetizers, salads, pizzas, and entrees is eclectic and reasonably priced. Examples of appetizers include Island Creek oysters at $2 a pop, house made garlic potato chips for $5 and crabcakes with a red pepper aioli for $12. Entrees include a nice mix of seafood and meat dishes: Pork tenderloin with ratatouille, steak frites, salmon with fingerling potatoes, and a linguine with shrimp, scallops, and clams.

You can view their menu here.

Lastly, they have an interesting martini menu. One in particular caught our eye, the Baker’s Chocolate martini. This is a cocktail of vanilla infused vodka, white and dark chocolate liquers topped with Baker’s chocolate shavings. That sounds like a great dessert!

Elderly driver in Milton crash loses license

Wicked Local Milton reported yesterday that an elderly woman had her license revoked after causing an accident that sent a 21-year-old Dorchester man to the hospital.

The 81-year-old woman, Delores Crevola, was not injured in the accident. She was cited for a red light violation on Route 138 and Dollar Lane.

There has been a rash of accidents recently involving senior citizens and the state legislature has convened in the past month to examine the issue and listen to testimony from concerned citizens. Senator Joyce in particular has been vocal on the issue and been advocating for some time that elderly drivers be tested on a more frequent basis.

We have been running a poll on the issue which you can find on the right side of this page.

The article in Wicked Local includes advice from Senior Helpers, an agency that connects professional caregivers with elderly who choose to live at home instead of in a nursing or assisted-living facility. You can read the full article here.

Milton falls in wild Legion sectional final

from Wicked Local Milton

It took more than three hours, almost all of it played in either a steady drizzle or consistent downpour, and included 23 runs.

If there’s one thing that can be said about the American Legion sectional final between Milton Post 112 and Bridgewater Post 203, the third meeting between the two teams of the tournament, it’s that it was a test to see which team wanted it most. (Read the full story here.)

Cape League Spotlight: Alex Hassan

from the Cape Cod Times

Alex Hassan

Alex Hassan

Milton native Alex Hassan was drafted in the 20th round this summer by the Boston Red Sox. The Duke right-hander is in his second summer with Orleans.

Duke’s Alex Hassan wears many different hats. He’s a right-handed pitcher. But he also plays outfield sometimes. And oh yeah – he can also be an explosive designated hitter. There’s more to the Boston Red Sox 20th-round draft pick than just baseball, too. He’s also a movie critic, quick to give reviews of this summer’s blockbusters. Hassan discusses his multiple positions, his second season on the Cape and what it’s like to be a Cape League All-Star. (Read the Cape Cod Times interview with Alex here.)

Milton will shut off lights to save money

from Wicked Local Milton

In a few months, Milton at night will be half as bright as it used to be.

The town this week began shutting off half of its 3,000 streetlights, going down each street and flipping the switch for every other fixture.

Several other South Shore towns have considered the idea, but most have backed off because of what electric companies charge to turn them off – quotes of $25 to $300 a light. In some cases, the town also was told it would have to pay a rental fee for the fixtures even if they were turned off. (Read the full story here.)

Branch libraries in Massachusetts dwindling

The recent closing of the East Milton branch library upset a number of residents in that neighborhood. However, as an article in the Boston Globe reports, Milton is not the only town forced to make difficult decisions with regard to its branch libraries.

The number of branch libraries in Massachusetts has fallen from 143 in 1990 to less than 100 today.

Janet Evans, current chair of the Library Board of Trustees is quoted. You can find the Globe article here.

Bridgewater wins twice, rallying in ninth to force rematch with Milton for South title

from Wicked Local Milton

With one swing of the bat, Rob Hinckley saw his average jump 250 points. What really mattered, though, was that his Bridgewater American Legion baseball season got a 1,000 percent lift in the process.

Hinckley collected his first hit of the season in four at-bats with a two-out, two-run single in a four-run ninth inning for Bridgewater Post 203, capping a 9-8 comeback win over Milton Post 114 at Cunningham Park on Wednesday in the Legion South Sectional final.(Read the full story here.)
