Milton will shut off lights to save money

In a few months, Milton at night will be half as bright as it used to be.

The town this week began shutting off half of its 3,000 streetlights, going down each street and flipping the switch for every other fixture.

Several other South Shore towns have considered the idea, but most have backed off because of what electric companies charge to turn them off – quotes of $25 to $300 a light. In some cases, the town also was told it would have to pay a rental fee for the fixtures even if they were turned off. (Read the full story here.)
