The selection committee for the new Director of Facilities met last night and passed a motion to postpone discussion of the three finalists and selection of a director. Superintendent Mary Gormley and Town Administrator Kevin Mearn both asked for more time to consider the choice and the other three members of the committee; Selectman John Shields, School Committee member Denis Keohane,a nd Consolidated Facilities Committee Chair Tony Cichello deferred to their request.

Tom Hurley to run for Selectman
Tom Hurley is running for election to the Milton Board of Selectmen. He will be challenging Eddie Duffy, the only other announced candidate to date, for McEttrick’s seat. Chairman McEttrick is retiring at the end of her term.
Hurley is a lifelong resident of Milton who will be running on a platform of fiscal responsibility.
School reverses course on grandfathering issue for incoming students
Several weeks ago the school administration informed parents that it was changing its policy regarding the siblings of incoming first graders as it relates to neighborhood schools and program (ie French or English) registration. Parents were told that siblings of students already in a school would no longer be grandfathered into the same school. All students would enter a lottery should a program be oversubscribed. It has reversed that decision. The original policy is back in effect. Students with a sibling already in a neighborhood school will be grandfathered into that same school independent of program they choose.
Milton Squirt B team headed to South Conference Playoffs!
The Milton Squirt B team won three straight games to enter the Finals of the Needham Youth Hockey February Tournament. Despite consecutive wins, they were all hard fought victories vs. Needham (3-2), Weymouth (4-2) and the Spitfires (3-0). Prior to facing The Spitfires, both teams were undefeated in the tournament.

Milton native, favorite rocker, and member of the Dropkick Murphy’s has put out a new song with his band mates. It is titled Going Out in Style and is on a new album by the same name. It references a variety of local Boston personalities and places, including Milton’s own Chief Wells.

Retired RI Chief Justice Williams to speak on Lincoln
Forbes House Museum will host “Abraham Lincoln at 200,” a talk by Lincoln Historian and Rhode Island Chief Justice Frank Williams (ret.), on Sunday, 6 March 2011 at 4pm in the Exhibit Room at Forbes House Museum.
Chief Justice Williams will examine the Lincoln phenomenon as we conclude the bicentennial observance of his birth. Many revere President Lincoln for his political courage and effectiveness as our Civil War leader. Others feel differently and attempt to disparage him, his character and his leadership.
