MyTownMatters and the Forbes House Museum are happy to offer a series of short stories and illustrations on Ireland’s Great Famine and its connection to Milton and Boston. Since 2011, the FHM has been collaborating with scholars and civic groups from the United States and Ireland, researching the Great Famine, which took place from 1845 to 1852. The FHM Great Famine project seeks to raise awareness for the historic 1847 humanitarian voyage of Captain Robert Bennet Forbes (1804- 1889), who transported 800 tons of food and other provisions to Cork, Ireland aboard the USS Jamestown at the height of the Famine.
Beginning in summer 1845, a tragic chain of events took place in Ireland that eventually led to the humanitarian response from Boston in winter/spring 1847, organized by Captain Forbes and the 21 members of the New England Relief Committee. In the publication, Massachusetts Help to Ireland During the Great Famine, H. A. Crosby Forbes and Henry Lee wrote:
A Milton resident and psycholgist, Tara Cousineau, wrote a piece for the Huffington Post on teen drinking. It’s an issue. The article was circulated widely on local social media but if you missed it – it is worth a read. Ms. Cousineau begins:

Senator Joyce and Representative Timilty started the new session yesterday. They along with Representative Cullinane represent Milton at the state house.
The 6th annual Saint Rock Haiti Foundation (SRHF) Gala Auction and Reverse Raffle will take place at the Neighborhood Club in Quincy on February 5, 2015 at 6:30 pm. The theme is Faces of Saint Rock – Hope and Health, Improving Primary Care.

There is a changing of the guard at the Massachusetts State House. Deval Patrick left the building last night and Governor elect Baker will enter today.
Deval Patrick of Milton was a great governor who did not play favorites among the communities of the Commonwealth. Deval Patrick, who said to B.U.’s graduating class last May:
. . . human intimacy still matters. That’s how we build trust, how we convey kindness and grace, how we love, how we heal the world.
