FAVA receives cultural grant; will offer free art workshops

FAVA (The Friends and Advocates of the Visual Arts), a local group that provides arts instruction and advocates for the arts in the elementary schools has been on a bit of a roll recently. They recently submitted a proposal to occupy the East Milton Library, they will be hosting an art opening of student work, and they just received a grant to provide free one day workshops to the children of Milton.

FAVA was chosen from hundreds of arts and culture-based groups who applied from across the state and they are grateful for the award. “We are thrilled to be able to offer this workshop to the Milton community,” said Karen Hainline, one of the FAVA teachers. “Since many of our programs are fee-based, this is an opportunity to reach some young artists that we might not otherwise have reached.”

The workshops will be held at the Milton Public Library and are structured to provide a hands-on artistic opportunity for families. Although the workshops are free, space is limited and registration is required. These are not drop-off events. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The first workshop, designed for students in Grades 3 and higher, is a media workshop that will provide instruction on tabletop animation, demonstrating stop-motion techniques using Legos, clay and a variety of other objects. It will also explore how special effects are created using a green screen. The workshop will be held on January 16 from 3 to 4:30 pm. To register for this workshop, please contact Janet Gilmore at: janetgilmore@comcast.net

The second workshop, designed for students in Grades K, 1 and 2 is a printmaking workshops, where students will explore different print making techniques, including monoprints, collagraph and stenciling. The workshop will be held on January 23 from 2-4 pm. To register for this workshop, please contact Karen Hainline (karenhainline@comcast.net) or Jessica Gillooly(jesskgill@hotmail.com).

FAVA was started in 2003 to provide additional art time for children. It is the mission of FAVA to promote the visual arts in the Milton Public Schools; to advocate for greater visual arts  opportunities for the students; and to lobby for appropriate funding for the visual arts within the school budget. Proceeds go directly to the school’s art programs. In the past FAVA has funded the ACE bus, installing the kiln at Pierce, and getting specialized materials or visuals not covered by the budget.
