At their meeting last Thursday the Board of Selectmen heard about the town of Easton’s experience with the Community Preservation Act (CPA) from the Chair of their Board of Selectmen, Colleen Corona. Ms. Corona was attending at the invitation of Selectman Keohane. Corona stated that the CPA had been beneficial to Easton and that the act had provided the town with ~$5 million to fund a variety of projects and enabled them to “control their community’s destiny.”
“Milton Faces Forward” shown on the Gazebo

Last Friday night Artspace Milton staged the first of three slide shows on the Gazebo in front of Town Hall. Portraits of over 150 residents, town officials, and high school athletes were displayed on three screens hung in the front of the gazebo. The project, titled Milton Faces Forward, formed a collective snapshot of the town in this, its 350th anniversary year.

The public is invited inside the 1794 Isaac Davenport Manor House at the Polly Wakefeld estate, 1465 Brush Hill Road in Milton.
On this Sunday, October 14 from 1 to 4 PM the first floor of the house, which he called his “Country Seat”, and the estate gardens will be open. The late Polly Wakefield, a Davenport descendant, left the 1707 farm house, this mansion, and a 22 acre estate and the contents, for educational purposes.

Group forms in response to Community Preservation Act ballot question

A group of Milton citizens is pleased to announce they have formed the Preservation Without Taxation (PWT) committee in response to the CPA tax ballot question that, if passed, will create a new permanent tax on Milton property owners.
Mtg Notes: School Committee 10.03.12 – Superintendent lays out plan for capping French enrollments

At the 10/3 session of the School Committee the Superintendent presented her plan for capping the enrollment in the French Immersion program. She began with a review of why she made that recommendation. She cited recent enrollment trends which have impeded the districts “ability to provide an optimal learning environment” for all students.
Don Hussey, Author of Ticket To Ride, Speaks at Milton Public Library
Educators applaud the non-fiction book, Ticket To Ride, The Promise of America, as an inspiration to struggling students. Author Don Hussey of Hingham will share his personal story on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Public Library located at 476 Canton Avenue, Milton.
Ticket to Ride is an unflinching memoir of a man who overcame almost impossible odds to realize the American dream as a businessman and candidate for U.S. Congress. Hussey inspires all to excel no matter what the obstacles. A book signing will follow.

St Elizabeth’s property being fenced

A fencing company is erecting a chain link fence around the St. Elizabeth’s rectory. No Trespassing sings have been put on the lawn. The church’s position is that the building is being removed because it will enhance the marketability of the property and that the building cannot be salvaged. It appears that the demolition will occur soon.
SC needs to vote on French cap

At the end of July the superintendent recommended that a cap be placed on 1st enrollments in the French Immersion program. It is October and the School Committee has yet to vote on the recommendation. And, based on past comments, it is likely they will continue to kick that vote down the road when they meet this evening.
