Pierce gets locked down

The Pierce Middle School was locked down at approximately 1:00pm this afternoon. The building has been cleared and  school has been dismissed. The reason for the lockdown was a tip received that a student was going to be bringing a firearm to school.

A student was taken into custody, a stay in place lock down was issued, and the premises were searched. No firearm was found and at no time were any students in any danger. News crews are on the scene and it will likely be on the evening news.

Following is the statement issued to parents from Superintendent Gormley:

Pierce Middle School was placed in a “Stay In Place/Lock Down” this afternoon at approximately 1:00 PM.

The Milton Police were immediately contacted when an allegation was made that student may be in possession of a gun. An investigation concluded that the gun was not in the school.

A 15 year old juvenile has been taken into custody by the Milton Police Department related to this matter.

As a precautionary measure and in consultation with the Milton Police Department, Pierce Middle School remained in “Stay In Place/Lockdown” Mode until 2:45 PM today.

The Milton Police then conducted a ballistics canine search of the parameter of the building and some school lockers. At no time did the dogs come in contact with the students.

At no time were students or staff in jeopardy.

We would like to thank the Milton Police, the Pierce Middle School staff, students, and parents/guardians for their patience and flexibility during this process.

If you have any questions, please contact the Pierce Middle School main office or the Superintendent’s office.

Superintendent Mary C. Gormley
