Author James Fichter to speak at Forbes Museum

The Forbes House Museum in partnership with the Shirley-Eustis House Association is proud to bring the author, James R. Fichter to Milton for an evening of lecture, book signing and reception.

James Fichter, author of “So Great a Proffit: How the East Indies Trade Transformed Anglo-American Capitalism,” will speak on the history of the Trade, read excerpts from his book and answer questions. A light reception, sponsored by Harvard University Press will follow

The book, published by Harvard University Press, draws on a wide range of sources to provide a deep exploration of how the Asia trade proved pivotal to the evolution of capitalism in the United States.

Steven Hahn, critic of the New Republic, says, “Fichter paints a rich and evocative portrait of the East India trade, from the outfitting of the ships and the financing of the voyages to the length of the journeys and the pulse of the markets.”
