Media explosion in Milton

Commentary by Frank Schroth

What is going on around here? Who knew Milton would become the media capital of the south shore?

Once upon a time there was the Milton Record-Transcript and then in the late 80’s or so, The Milton Times started up. And the Times is and has served as the paper of record for Milton. Then the internet happened, and it has finally come to Milton.

About a year ago MyTownMatters launched as a web-based clearinghouse for “all things Milton.” A couple of weeks ago Boston.com launched Your Town: Milton as part of its local news initiative. Boston.com has town-based efforts in approximately 20+ Boston area communities and plans to keep growing.  A similar news service from Gatehouse Media, owners of the Patriot Ledger, is called Wicked Local Milton, and it has been around for some time.

Well get ready for another: milton.patch.com. They have been beating about the bushes here for several weeks now and will launch tomorrow, Monday. Patch.com is a hyperlocal news effort that began (I believe) in New Jersey. It is an AOL company. Great, just what I need; the Boston Globe and AOL in my backyard. Hey! This was my idea!

But competition is always good, and sustained, comprehensive coverage of local affairs is always needed; this is one reason I began MyTownMatters.

We are not going to change anything we do. We will continue to aggregate news and information from a wide variety of sources, provide a platform for community groups to post events and report happenings, and we shall deliver impartial, unbiased, thorough coverage of major town topics that matter.

We have a homegrown outlook, informed by a love of this town and all of its residents, and our agenda is to promote civic participation and active engagement in our community, Milton, Massachusetts.  We believe that my town matters. Remember, life is local.
