Update: Lock down at the High School

At last night’s School Committee meeting Chief Wells, Officer Richmond, and Dr. Drottar along with Superintendent Gormey addressed the the committee and gave a summary of the incident at the school and the actions taken before news crews from both Channel 7 and Fox.

The incident began just before non when several rounds of small caliber ammunition were found in a stairwell by a student who notified a staff member. The school was locked down until approximately 5:00pm while officers performed a comprehensive search for any weapons. Chief Wells said, “This is the last building I want to come into in this town.”

The lockdown was coordinated by MPD Officer Jack Richmond who commended the school administration, students, and staff. Officer Richmond works closely with the schools and the policies, processes and procedures that he has worked with the schools to put in place were credited for what was a smooth operation. The safety and security of the studenst was paramount. Wells said he was stern with the staff and emphasized with them that they are the authority figures in the school and they in turn need to take a stern approach. “It only takes one round to change a life,” said Wells.

The investigation is ongoing and Wells did not venture a theory as to cause. “I do not know why someone would do this.” However, he did say that if they identify the person, they will be prosecuted. He alo noted it was an expensive operation. The cost is likely to be at least $20,000 and could rise to well over that.

There will be a police presence at the school today. Whether the police will be stationed there through the week is to be determined. It will depend in part on how the investigation goes.

The investigation is being led by Dectective West. People with informtion are encouraged to call 617-898-4804 first. If they are unable to get through or reach someone they can call the main number  617-698-3800.

Beirne Lovely, who was attending his last committee meeting, said, “Thank you. . . thank you and your officers for being so responsible and responsive.”
