Brief Bits: Financial lifeline for school budget; Keohane shifts into campaign mode

by Frank Schroth

At last week’s meeting of the Milton School Committee Assistant Superintendent for Business Glenn Pavlicek said that the budget put together by Governor Baker would send ~$250,000 Milton’s way in terms of Chapter 70 (Education) funding.

Pavlicek cautioned that the budget still needs legislative approval. The cash is not on the barrel head yet; but there is hope. This statement came on the same evening that residents voiced concerns over cuts to the music, art, and STEP. While there was no commitment from the committee or administration one would hope that the funding would assist in restoring some if not all of those cuts to the FY16 budget.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALast Sunday Denis Keohane, who is running for re-election to the Board of Selectmen, kicked off his campaign in the same spot as his challenger, David Burnes — the Hoosic Club. The  kick off celebrated Mr. Keohane’s Irish heritage. There were green balloons, penny whistles, and a rendition of Danny Boy. As with the previous week’s event, it was hard to hear yourself; but there was more than enough liveliness and energy to go around. In his remarks Mr. Keohane said “I represent a changing Milton.” He spoke of his 3 years in office, citing the development of the East Milton parking project, a more responsive building department, and attention to the needs of seniors as issues he has put energy against.

Nomination papers are due at end of day today. In addition to the Selectmen, there will be races for School Committee and Library Board of Trustee.
