Position: Summer Crew Leader

Employment Dates: June 22 – August 21, 2015

Work Schedule: 30-37 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Crew Leader Job Description

Crew Leaders will work alongside and supervise Green Team youth as they:

·          Clean and beautify Hyde Park’s central business district and distribute anti-littering materials to business owners and residents;

·          Restore urban wilds by removing trash, yard waste and invasive species; pruning trees; planting environmentally appropriate trees and shrubs; building trails; and creating new trailheads;

·          Monitor and care for goats;

·          Conduct community outreach to engage residents in restoration efforts.

Crew Leaders will also:

·          Work with the Green Team Program Coordinator to plan and facilitate training on proper workplace conduct and constructive conflict resolution;

·          Assist volunteer trainers with workshops such as resume-writing, personal financial education and bicycle safety;

·          Plan and lead indoor environmental education activities on ‘rainy days’;

·          Accompany youth on environmental field trips such as the Brookwood Community Farm and the Roxbury Food Project, and a canoe trip on the local Mother Brook;

·          Report directly to the Hyde Park Green Team Program Coordinator;

·          Participate in weekly meetings with the Green Team Program Coordinator and the SWBCDC Assistant Director.

Key Responsibilities

Execute (and modify when necessary) a daily program schedule including work projects and educational activities prepared by the SWBCDC Assistant Director and Green Team Program Coordinator.
Communicate effectively with organizations providing training and field trips, and coordinate any necessary travel logistics in advance of the trips.
Provide positive direction and supervision while working alongside youth. Create a supportive work environment while giving enthusiastic and clear direction.
Explain and enforce strict disciplinary and safety rules.
Communicate with parents as necessary.
Meet regularly with SWBCDC Assistant Director and/or the Green Team Program Coordinator to provide program updates, receive feedback and discuss challenges.
Participate in 2 weeks of Crew Leader training and orientation before youth begin.
Conduct youth and program evaluations throughout the duration of the program as well as administrative wrap-up activities at the end of the program.

Qualifications Required:

Permanent City of Boston resident between the ages of 21 and 24.
One or more years of experience working with youth
Experience managing a team including planning and coordination, supervision, conflict resolution and enforcement of established disciplinary procedures
Ability to ride a bicycle and knowledge of safe bicycle riding practices
Ability to lift 25 pounds and work outside for extended periods of time
Experience in, or strong interest in learning basic gardening, landscaping or trail-building skills
Strong communication and organization skills
Experience working in diverse communities

Job Title: PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Hours: 30 per week, March 15-October 31, 2015 (Start and end dates are flexible with possible transition to long-term position.)

Program Coordinator Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the SWBCDC Assistant Director, the Green Team Program Coordinator will have primary responsibility for administering all aspects of the Green Team program. The Program Coordinator will:

Assist with hiring of Crew Leaders and Youth Crew Members
Orient, train and supervise 4 Crew Leaders in the summer, and 1 Crew Leader in the spring and fall
Coordinate environmental education and job readiness trainings with volunteer trainers.
Meet periodically with Boston Parks Department staff  to determine  the scope of work and monitor work progress at Urban Wild sites
Create program schedules
Track program spending
Participate in work and educational activities as needed to observe the crew and Crew Leaders in the field, and to photograph the Team’s work.
Oversee annual program evaluation
Attend appropriate workshops and networking events, as determined by the Assistant Director
Work with Southwest Boston CDC staff as needed and participate in staff meetings

Qualifications

Required Experience:

Supervising or teaching youth
Youth program development
Experience working in diverse communities
Interest in caring for wooded conservation land
Ability to ride a bicycle
Excellent verbal and written skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Well organized, able to multi-task
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member

Helpful Experience:

Staff or intern supervision
Landscaping, trail maintenance, gardening/farming
Bike safety and maintenance
Environmental education
Budget management
