The Conservation Commission voted unanimously for an enforcement order that requests Carrick Realty to perform testing of the contents of underground tanks on the Hendries property. The Commission was scheduled to take up the issue of demolition permits for the building. Both the town and Carrick, each of whom own a portion of the structure asked for continuances. The continuances were granted but not without the commission voicing frustration with both parties for dragging this out.
According to statements made at the session, there are 6 underground wells or tanks. Four are outside the structure and 2 under it. The Commission is looking for testing to the 4 that are outside. The issue came up at their meeting on 11/18. John Kiernan, Chair of the Commission, continues to voice concern over not knowing what is down there and views testing which is “not costly and not difficult” as an quick way to resolve the issue. member Craig MacNaught sought an enforcement order to have the tanks removed arguing that “we know there is oil in them.” The other members did not support that and viewed the testing as the next step.
The Commission voted on the enforcement order for the testing and expects the results to be available for their next session on 3/10.
