“No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they would die for.“
— Chief Wells quoting MLK Jr
Early yesterday evening the Milton Interfaith Clergy Association held it’s annual memorial celebration of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Milton Police Chief Richard Wells was the keynote speaker.
He invited two Boston law enforcement officers who are also Milton residents to attend. They were Supt.-in-Chief William Gross, the first African American superintendent in chief on the Boston Police Force and Captain Haseeb Hosein, the first Muslim Captain.
We were unable to attend as we were out of town. Regardless, it is not hard to view that this event — which commemorated America’s most significant African American civil rights leader and featured a white police officer as its keynote speaker during a very challenging time for law enforcement and civil rights — was something special, positive and good.
We thanks Elizabeth Thomas for her notes and photos on this event.
