Milton among 100 safest cities according to Neighborhood Scout

As the Milton Police recently noted on their Facebook page, Neighborhood Scout, which performs data analysis on neighborhoods, had listed Milton in its top 100 safest cities for the 3rd year. They annually research:

“100 safest cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Data used for this research are 1) the number of total crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and 2) the population of each city.”

You can find the complete list and more information here.

This looks just like this, http://02186.mytownmatters.com/?p=35508 posted by 02186 and MPD 10 months ago. Both are for 2014 ratings, so is this supposed to be a reminder that we have a wonderful PD or is it reposting of old news because it is budget time? TMM P7

According to the FBI crime statistics, because of changes in MPD reporting practices one cannot compare the current statistics to Milton’s previous years’ data. MPD should correct its postings here and on Facebook for both their Feb and current posts about its 2014 rankings. It cannot, with truth, report that Milton had a 40 place improvement in its ranking. It is misleading and not factual according to information from the FBI which collects the data. Now more than ever, our communities and country need trust in our police departments. MPD stands well without embellishment, so please, let’s not mislead the public with statements that are not true.

We welcome comments and as a rule do not respond; however, a couple points of clarification might be in order here. Regarding the statement above that the “MPD should correct its postings here. . .” I am responsible for this post, not the MPD. With regard to that, if there is a flaw in the analysis, the responsibility for that and any correction lies with Neighborhood Scout. We link to a wide variety of outside sources. We do not and will not fact check their material. As with comments and letters, the opinions and content are the responsibility of the authors/original publishers. We make that information available as we believe breadth of coverage and diverse points of view are in the public interest. We agree “the MPD stands well” and that any spot on the top 100 is an understandable point of pride.
