Notice from the Milton Police Department (Facebook page)

Update 5:00pm

Milton Business owners- another Milton Business was successfully hit by these phone scammers today. The victim was beat for $1000 in the same type phone scam using a CVS ‘green dot” prepay card. We have consulted with NSTAR Security and this issue has been happening throughout the nation. PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE WITH anyone WHO CALLS YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS looking for immediate payment of any kind. All Utility companies have customer service numbers and direct online bill pay. NONE use something as is being untilled in these scams with prepaid debit cards… If you are a Milton business owner please SHARE. We have also emailed the Milton Chamber on this issue to highlight the importance of these crimes.

Tonight several Milton locations received phone calls from a subject stating he was with NSTAR. In each case he states their bill was delinquent and power would be shut off if the bill was not paid right away. The caller directed each victim to go to a CVS and purchase a “green dot” prepay card. The calls came from an “800” number.
NEVER engage in activity where a caller is having you forward money in such a manner. If you receive such a call, call the Utility Billing office directly to confirm this. Don’t take the word of the caller or call back the number THEY provide. If you are suspicious at all when someone is trying to collect a bill, call MPD right away. These scams can be routed out very quickly as to their veracity. Please take note of this scam and pass on to your friends…
