MPD Notice: Phone scam

The following notice was posted on the Milton Police Department Facebook page. You can “friend” them here.

Good evening – we received a tip today that described a FB post a resident received. We want to describe again this very common PHONE SCAM.

You receive a phone call from someone stating “your family has been in an accident or others cases, they are in jail.” They always try to add that the family member gave the number to call you. The ultimate GOAL of this SCAM is to get you to fork over money that they allege is to help your family member. In today’s case, the resident alertly told the caller they were calling 911 which brought an immediate “Hang-up” from this so called Good Samaritan! Last week we had a similar incident and the resident called us. When we asked them to call and check on the family member, they found all was fine.

It is easy to call an unsuspecting citizen and hit them with a shocking story allegedly involving something tragic upon this family member. Sometimes they will get a person to fall for this, fork over some money and the next thing we have a new scam victim.
ANYTIME you receive a call of this nature, call MPD right away. If it were legit , we will investigate and make a quick determination as to the legitimacy of the call. Sadly, every day we deal with tragedies. Many times it involves a tragedy or situation outside of Milton. These are incidents where notification has to be made to family members who live in our Town. There are protocols for these situations that exist among law enforcement, medical facilities, coroners, and other government agencies. None of us would
ever delegate a stranger to make a call of this type.

Today the call originated from phone number 617-306-4147. This number is not legitimate.
Thanks for posting about this scam operation and please share with your family and friends. Many thanks….
