On Sunday, May 18th, the St. Mary of the Hills community gathered together for the third annual Walk for Haiti. The Walk began 3 years ago when St. Mary’s students Jacob Martens, Janelle Saint-Eloi and Thalia Etienne returned from a leadership conference in Washington D.C. They decided they wanted to begin a tradition that not only brought the school together, but benefited children in need beyond St. Mary of the Hills. Fifth Grade teacher, Alexia Etienne and principal Lisa Fasano, helped these students make their goal a reality.
St. Mary of the Hills felt a special connection to the children of Haiti, as three students were survivors of the 2010 earthquake. By gathering the community to walk together every year, the school is able to raise money to donate to the Haiti-Micah Project. There are two routes to choose from, an 8 mile walk or a 3 mile walk around the town of Milton.
This year, the Walk for Haiti drew nearly 200 people and raised over $3,000. Donations are still coming in to the school. This special event was a huge success for the St. Mary of the Hills community and continues to grow every year. To learn more about the Haiti-Micah Project, visit www.haiti-micah.org.
