Brief bits: Date set for 2nd Annual Milton Music Fest, Relay for Life raises ~$20,000, & those Hendries signs

by Frank Schroth

Last year the Milton’s 350th birthday celebration took place on Hutchinson Field with a concert and fireworks display. It will be back this year. The date is June 21st – same place. The event is organized by We Are Milton and made possible through generous funding from The Copeland Foundation. But there’s more – there will also be a Celtic Celebration the following day, June 22nd. Details to be announced.

Last week’s Relay for Life benefit for the American Cancer Society raised over $20,000 for the organization. The event was organized by MHS students Matt McCarthy and Tansy Massey-Green.

And then there’s these signs that appeared on the Hendries property. The town has been in discussions with Carrick Realty to take down the building. An agreement has yet to be signed between the two parties. Both the town and Carrick own portions of the property. The town owns the parking lot and structure above it with Carrick owing the rest. The issue is that while it is mutually agreed that both should take their respective portions down at the same time, the town has two pending demolition orders on Carrick to remove their portion which they are appealing. It was initially intended that the agreement would forgive any present or future legal claims one party had with the other. As the process for reaching agreement has been drawn out that has become less clear. The Carrick attorney, Brian McDonough, most recently voiced concerns that should Carrick be viewed as prepping the site they may jeopardize their current 40B application. Carrick is waiting on a letter of eligibility from Mass Housing to pursue a 40B development and take the next step which would be to file a comprehensive permit with the Milton Board of Appeals. The Board of Selectmen are scheduled continue the hearing on the matter at their session on May 20th. In the meantime Hendries has fenced off the property which is the first step in securing it for demolition and posted the following signs.

Anyone know if the building has been tested for asbestos and/or any other chemical that may go airborne during demolition? If so, what are the proposed mitigation or containment strategies that will be utilized during the process? The existing structures sit too close to houses, the trolley station, outdoor retail areas (Plate), and indoor retail that could jeopardize a lot of people during demolition.
