Today I am formally announcing my candidacy for re-election to the Milton Library Board of Trustees. The knowledge and experience I have gained coupled with my professional skills and passion for our library can be applied to the library’s mission as a vital hub that serves the information and cultural needs of the entire community.
In my first term, the library had several important accomplishments. A new director was hired and pedestrian and vehicle safety were improved. Several steps were taken to improve customer service and patron satisfaction. In addition, we secured a portrait of Nathaniel Kidder, the father of the Milton Library, on loan from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, instituted a new community-wide reading initiative (Milton Reads!), presented, and received approval for, budgets that were fiscally defensible, and maintained the quality of the collection and delivery of services.
Going forward, I will continue to put time and attention to patron satisfaction, the budget, promoting effective communication among library organizations (Friends, Foundation) and all town departments, and developing a new strategic plan. I will work with our director and trustees to explore ways to extend the library beyond its physical walls.
If elected, I will contribute my energy, ideas, and support to our director and fellow trustees to continue the work of offering our town a rich local repository of resources and information in all its forms, with free access for all.
I moved to Milton in 1988 with my wife Annie Davis. We have raised two children here, both proud graduates of the Milton Public Schools. I have been active in Town Soccer and the Friends of Milton Crew and remain active with Artspace Milton and Brookwood Farm. I continue to serve as a judge for National History Day, a nationwide history competition for middle and high-school students, and I never met a community road race that I didn’t want to run.
I respectfully ask for 1 of your 3 votes on April 29th. I will work to sustain the tireless efforts of those that have come before me and to ensure the progress of the Milton Public Library going forward.
