The Milton Public Library is committed to creating a safe environment for all those visiting the Library. This safety refers not only to what goes on inside our facilities, but extends to our grounds and parking lot. The MPL is collaborating with the Milton Police Department, the Department of Public Works,Consolidated Facilities and the Traffic Commission to ensure that our users can enter and exit the library grounds safely.
The Library Board of Trustees has a three step plan for improving safety. This will not only create a safer environment, but it also addresses the need for additional parking. The goal is to complete this plan over the next several years. The three steps to the plan are:
STEP ONE (finished October 2013) –
- Reverse the direction in the Library Parking Lot, switching the Entrance and Exit
- Reline the parking lot
- Improve signage at the Entrance and Exit
- Create additional parking spaces on Canton Avenue, approximately across the street from Town Hall. These spaces will also mitigate traffic speed.
STEP TWO –
- Implement a crosswalk and blinking light on Canton Avenue at Town Hall. This will improve the safety of pedestrian traffic from Town Hall, and students coming from the High School.
- The Library will seek state funding for this improvement
STEP THREE –
- Parking Lot Redesign
- Removal of the copper beech tree located between the Entrance and Exit. An arborist has found that this tree is at its end of life. The crown is shrinking and limbs are dying. There is a serious concern for public safety. The Trustees will be consulting with the Conservation Commission on planting new tree(s) in areas where they are needed and can thrive.
- Introduction of a turnaround where the tree formerly was. This turnaround will enable patrons looking for a parking space to circle the parking lot without exiting onto Canton Avenue.
- The Library will raise funds for the Parking Lot Redesign.
We are confident that once these changes are made, both motorists and pedestrians will find the Library a safer place to visit.
