The Milton Selectmen meet in Quincy

Commentary by Frank Schroth

Any minute now the Board of Selectmen are going to take up a discussion of the Town Administrator’s goals and objectives .  .  . in Quincy .  .  . on a Saturday morning in a private office building.

The School Committee goes through a similar process with the Superintendent; but they do it as an agenda item during a regularly scheduled session — so too should the Selectmen. Especially as this is the first time in recent memory that they have taken up this exercise. It is a good and worthwhile thing to do. Especially if coordinated and done in conjunction with goals and objectives that the Selectmen set for themselves as a board.

We appreciate that time is tight. If the meeting had to occur on a Saturday morning, could it not have been scheduled for the COA or the small conference room in the ground floor of the library?

Ms. Conlon has put forward the idea that the Selectmen meet more frequently — maybe 3 Tuesdays a month rather than only 2. The idea has received something of a tepid response from her colleagues. Previous boards have meet more frequently. It is worth taking up again.

It was made clear that today’s Saturday meeting is a public meeting, but in our opinion Milton business should be discussed in Milton  during a regularly scheduled session. We applaud the effort. It’s important, and we look forward to the board releasing the results.
