St. Michael’s Episcopal Church at 112 Randolph Ave. in Milton is accepting donations for the Thanksgiving collection to benefit the families of St. Mary’s in Dorchester. Now through November 24, donors can place items in a collection basket located in the entryway of St. Michael’s, or bring to them to the church office. Items needed include non-perishable traditional Thanksgiving foods including canned corn, green beans and cranberry sauce, as well as boxed or bagged stuffing mix. The church can not accept donations of turkeys, but will accept supermarket gift cards to purchase such food.
The food pantry at St. Mary’s is a critical mission in the neighborhood, serving hundreds of needy families every month. Most clients are residents from the Uphams Corner neighborhood; many struggle with chronic physical and or mental illness. All are underemployed or unemployed and tend to get stuck in classic cycles of poverty and crime in the neighborhood. A number of clients are recent immigrants and are struggling to get enough food for their families.
