Everybody loves lists. US News & World Report (is it still called that?) have made it there stock in trade. Boston Magazine, like many regional urban publications, has taken a page from that playbook and run with it. They recently came out with their list of top schools in the Boston area and Milton ranks 65 out of 147.
You can find the complete rankings and the methodology behind it here. Topping the list is Dover which spends$17,607 per pupil. This contrasts to Milton which spends $12,613. All of the top 10 schools spend more per capita than Milton. Milton ranks 69th in per pupil spending.
The data is interesting but there is no correction for or accounting of socio-economic status, diversity of population, etc. It may not tell the whole story; but it provides some useful insights.
