The Milton Public Library’s teen book club has selected Sickened: the True Story of a Lost Childhood by Julie Gregory as its May pick. Gregory spent much of her childhood in hospitals, being tested, medicated, and operated on, suffering from the effects of a disease that existed only her mother’s mind. Sickened is a memoir of Munchausen by proxy, a form of child abuse where a parent invents an illness to satisfy her craving for medical attention, and of Gregory’s escape from the horrifying life her mother built for her. The book club will meet at 7 p.m. on May 13 to discuss this unforgettable story.
The teen book club is open to ages 13-18. To obtain a copy of the book or for more information, please contact Emily Calkins, Young Adult Librarian, at (617) 698-5757 or ecalkins@ocln.org. The Milton Library is located at 476 Canton Ave., Milton, MA.
