On Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Milton Public Library offers up a screening of the 1967 Paul Newman film “Cool Hand Luke,” as the last one in our spring series “Movie Masculinity.” Starting at 6:15 host Jeff Stoodt, local middle school teacher, will pose movie trivia questions to the audience, one of the few to earn 100% from Rotten Tomatoes, the online film review aggregator. Trivia prizes will be awarded and it’s a lot of fun.
In “Cool Hand Luke,” Newman stars in the title role as a prisoner doing a stretch on a southern chain gang for a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system. “A tough, honest film with backbone,” writes Roger Ebert. The feature is supported by a terrific supporting cast: George Kennedy, Strother Martin, Dennis Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton. It received four Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Supporting Actor. In 2005, the United States Library of Congress deemed “Cool Hand Luke” to be “culturally, historically, or anesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. After trivia, the movie will start promptly at 6:30 in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the library, and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and this program is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Public Library. For more information, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services, at (617) 698-5757. The Library is located at 476 Canton Avenue, Milton and the website is www.miltonlibrary.org.
