Rep. Timilty Announces Exam Date to Establish List for Local & Transit Police Officers & State Troopers

Representative Walter Timilty (D–Milton) has announced that the Commonwealth’s Civil Service Commission will administer the entry-level Civil Service Examination for positions of Local Police, Transit Police and State Trooper on Saturday April 20, 2013. Applicants for these positions must complete and have their applications postmarked by March 18, 2013. Scores can then be applied to the municipalities of the applicant’s choice.

“The public safety of a community begins with those who protect and serve the citizens, so I am hopeful that we will field a plethora of qualified applicants, willing to take this first step towards serving our communities,” Timilty said.

The Human Resources Division of the Commonwealth says it is hoping for a qualified, diverse applicant pool to take the exam. Applicants can request to take the exam in Spanish, however, by doing so one must also take an exam testing English comprehension the same day. Members of the military who cannot be in Massachusetts on April 20th should contact Human Resources to request a makeup examination.

Minimum entrance requirements are as follows.

Applicants must:

  • Have either
    • A high school diploma or GED
    • Or 3 years experience in the United States Armed Service with an honorable discharge
  • Must be at least 21 years old and less than 35 years old on April 1, 2013.
  • Must pass a physical fitness test.
  • Must pass a medical examination, including a psychological component.
  • Must not smoke any tobacco product.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or any offense punishable under M.G.L. Chapter 94C (drug law violations); or have been convicted of a misdemeanor and confined to any jail or house of correction as punishment for said crime

Applicants may apply online at www.mass.gov/civilservice, and must either submit a $100 fee payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or request a fee waiver. Representative Timilty urged his constituents to contact him at his office if they have any further questions regarding the Civil Service Examination.
