The festive Jewish holiday of Purim will be celebrated at Temple Shalom of Milton this year with a Community Purim Celebration for all ages on Saturday evening, February 23rd, in the Great Hall of First Congregational Church, 495 Canton Avenue, Milton. Everyone is welcome.
The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with intergenerational Family Purim Craft Projects, Stickers and A Costume Parade with prizes. At 7 p.m. the children will be given parts and will retell the Purim Story. At 7:30 the adults will gather for the traditionally raucous Purim service and Megillah reading, led by Rabbi Fred Benjamin, while the children enjoy the movie “Alladin.” From 8:15-9:00 p.m. everyone will enjoy special Persian desserts baked by Sue Rose and her crew, with tea and live entertainment. Costumes are encouraged for all ages.
The Megillah tells the Purim story of Esther and her uncle Mordecai, who saved their Jewish brethren in ancient Shushan from the evil designs of the wicked Haman. Attendees often wear costumes and listen carefully to the Hebrew text so they can use noisemakers to drown out the name of Haman every time it is uttered.
Temple Shalom of Milton is a handicapped-accessible egalitarian congregation which serves Milton and the surrounding area. It conducts a full schedule of religious services throughout the year and has a full calendar of cultural, educational and social events. It also
