Over 25 MHS 9th graders attended the firsts drop-in book discussion group hosted by Milton Reads! 2012. They joined other adults in a discussion of the book To Kill a Mockingbird led by Pierce teacher Jeff Stoodt. The conversation ranged from favorite scenes to Atticus Finch as a father and the role of the past.
The students came with unique and fresh perspectives. There was not universal approval of Atticus. One student thought he was avoiding his responsibilities in having Calpurnia the African American housekeeper be the disciplinarian for the children.
There are going to be more drop-in discussions. You can find a complete schedule of events here.
The Friends of the Library have sold out their first order of books; but a new shipment arrived and books are still available for sale at the Friends book shop as is the “What would Atticus do?” bumper sticker.
Milton Reads members will be joining the Friends at their table at Celebrate Milton! on October 7th.
