News release from the office of Senator Brian A. Joyce
Senate and House pass bonding measures for millions of dollars for town
The Massachusetts Senate and House have passed legislation originally written by Senator Brian A. Joyce that sponsors four transportation improvement projects for the town of Milton. The Transportation Bond Bill came out of a conference committee of three Representatives and three Senators, including Joyce, that funds the projects originally located in the Senate version of the bill.
Most notably, the bill authorizes the town to make much needed parking, traffic and aesthetic improvements to the overpass spawning Route 93 in East Milton, along with $1 million in state funds to pay for the improvements. The changes have been long sought by East Milton business owners and by the Milton Chamber of Commerce. Joyce’s legislation would require the improvements to the deck resulting in not less than 40 percent open, recreational, or green space.
Additional provisions of the bill that were authored by Senator Joyce and kept in the final version that will benefit Milton include allowing the state to transfer all or some of the state highway yard on Granite Avenue to the town for possible development to generate commercial tax revenue for the town, along with $2.7 million for improvements to Blue Hills Parkway, Brush Hill Road and Truman Parkway.
“I am thankful we were able to keep these important projects in the final version of the bill as they will provide a great benefit to both the business owners and residents of Milton,” said Joyce. “The new investment in East Milton Square will provide an economic boost for the area’s small businesses and greater convenience for residents while the potential for commercial development of the state highway department yard on Granite Avenue could benefit the town for generations in tax revenue. Additionally, the continued transportation improvement to the Blue Hills Parkway, Brush Hill Road and Truman Parkway will continue to make Milton an attractive place to live.”
